Is HR Certification Worth It? An Honest Answer from HRCP
By Terri Varnell, SPHR, Chief Operating Officer, HRCP · Updated October 2026
Short answer: Yes. For most HR professionals, HR certification is worth it. An HR certification is a professional credential that validates your knowledge, skills, and competence in human resource management. It builds credibility with employers, helps you stand out in the job market, and can increase your career mobility and earning potential. The key is choosing the right exam and preparing well enough to pass on your first try.
At HRCP, we've helped more than 100,000 HR professionals prepare for their certification exams since 1995. The question we hear most before anyone opens a study book is a simple one: is it worth it? Here's our honest answer, plus what it takes to get there. You can do this, and we'll help you get there.
Why get HR certified?
A professional certification:
- Demonstrates verified expertise in your field
- Builds credibility with employers
- Signals a commitment to ongoing learning
- Helps you stand out in the job market
- Increases career mobility and earning potential
- Assures that your knowledge meets recognized industry standards
So what's a realistic expectation? Here's what we share when we present on HR certification: most HR professionals see about $3,000–$8,000 more per year early in their careers and $10,000–$20,000 more per year at the mid-to-senior level, along with faster promotions and better job access over time. Your results will depend on your role, region, and employer.
Which HR certification is right for me?
The right HR certification depends on your experience, your education, and your career goals. The two credentialing bodies, HRCI and SHRM, offer certifications at three levels:
- Entry level: the aPHR®. No HR experience is required, making it a great first step for career changers, students, and HR support roles.
- Professional level: the PHR® or the SHRM-CP®, for people handling day-to-day HR operations.
- Senior level: the SPHR® or the SHRM-SCP®, for people doing strategic-level HR work.
We get a lot of questions about which certification is best. In our opinion, the HRCI and SHRM certifications are comparable. Our advice: search HR job postings in your region to see which credentials employers are asking for, and pick the exam that fits your career goals.
Not sure where you fit? Take our free HR Certification Fit Assessment. A few quick questions about your experience and goals, and we'll recommend the certification that fits you best.
What does it take to earn an HR certification?
Earning an HR certification takes eligibility, an exam fee, a test date, and roughly one to four months of focused study.
- Experience: none for the aPHR; for the PHR, one to four years of professional-level HR experience depending on your education; for the SPHR, four to seven years. SHRM sets its own requirements.
- Cost: exam fees run from about $400 to $695 depending on the exam and, for SHRM, your membership. It's no small investment, so plan to pass on your first try.
- Scheduling: HRCI exams are offered year-round, with 180 days to test after approval, at Pearson VUE centers or online. SHRM exams have two testing windows (May 1–July 15 and December 1–February 15) at Prometric centers.
- Study time: plan on about 100–150 hours over three to four months for the PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP, and about 50–75 hours over one to two months for the aPHR.

How should I prepare for an HR certification exam?
How you prepare is a crucial decision to your success. There are three popular paths:
- Self-study: about half of our customers study on their own. It's the lowest-cost, most flexible option for self-motivated learners.
- A prep course: most run 12–16 weeks (aPHR courses are shorter) and add structure and accountability. Many partner courses use HRCP materials as their text.
- The micro-credential path: earn Micro HR digital badges as you prepare, so you have credentials to show along the way.
Whichever path you choose, these study habits make the biggest difference:
- Use practice exams to check your readiness. It's the very best way to assess how you're doing. Review why you missed questions, and aim for 80%.
- Practice under time pressure. You'll need to answer about one question every 60 seconds on the HRCI exams and every 90 seconds on the SHRM exams.
- Don't just memorize terms. Be able to explain concepts, perform calculations, and apply your knowledge.
- Focus your time on heavily weighted areas and on the areas where you have the least experience.
- Trust your preparation. A good night's sleep will do you more good than cramming.
